So how did it all begin? 

The Love Shine line of bag designs was founded by Mark Seamon  (a chef and visual artist at the time) and  Mike Gonzales  (a dancer & costume designer with Les Ballets Trocadero) in 1996 in the basement of a New York City Spanish Harlem apartment building. We began by creating one-of-a-kind handbags, totes and backpacks out of dyed canvas for our friends and family as a way to direct our creative desires. The response was enthusiastic and soon enough we began getting special requests and orders from friends of friends and a then a couple of small boutiques and before we knew it… a small business was born.

Many of my designs were inspired by our travels. For example in Mexico, we were stuck by the bright and colorful bales of mesh nylon and oil cloth that was traditionally used for table covers. We also collected images and trims and other local knick-knacks and bric-a-brac to bring back New York (out of adoration) and for inspiration. As time progressed (and Mark eventually became chief designer), we developed a line of mesh totes, oil cloth accessories, carry-all bags in colorful cottons and upholstery fabrics, canvas messenger bags with fun-tastic images.

So we grew out of that uptown basement space and opened up a small studio/shop/showroom in the funky, artsy East Village of NYC in March 1997.  In addition to the wonderful accessories we lovingly offer our neighborhood, the store has been the site of numerous "runaway runway" side-walk fashion shows [see video clips at http://www.youtube.com/user/Maestronegro2 ] and art installations in our windows.  Love Shine has become, over the years, an East Village institution where, as our motto goes...

"We Treat Our Family Like Customers"!
